History of Our Club Model UN is a worldwide program designed to help students learn about the world around them through a simulation of the actual United Nations. Students become the delegates of the nations they have chosen to represent and simulate the debates that would go on at the UN itself. Through this process they become more effective at debating and solving problems facing the international community. At East Brunswick High School, Model UN is an after school honors class with a grading system based on research, position papers, and the students participation at the conference. Most students must try out for this program, but those with a significant level of experience are exempt. This year, EBHS will be attending Rutgers University Model UN, Harvard Model UN and NAIMUN (Georgetown). Mr. Alan Brodman is the advisor of the EB Model United Nations program. His role as the teacher of this program is to provide the students with the information and methods they will need to take full advantage of the opportunities that Model UN provides. He also oversees the operation of the executive board. The students on the executive board are responsible for running meetings, evaluating positions papers, guiding the GA's (student delegation leaders) and communicating with the other members of the club. GAs are chosen by Mr. Brodman before every conference. The students who wish to be GA's must submit a request to the executive board or Mr. Brodman. Two GAs will be selected for each delegation. They are responsible for creating a country paper, helping their delegations to prepare for the conference, evaluating position papers, and maintaining their support of the delegation members at the conference itself. If the delegate faces any problems regarding his country's view point on an issue, the GA is there to advise them. Last year we attended RUMUN, HMUN, and NHSMUN (Rutgers, Harvard, and New York). At Rutgers, we had 43 delegates and won the distinguished Outstanding Delegation award, which was giving to schools, not countries. At HMUN, we sent 17 of our best Seniors and Juniors Delegates, and won one of the only two awards given: Honorable Mention. At NHSMUN, we sent 51 of our delegates and walked away with very impressive awards. All three of our delegations received awards; USA was awarded Best Delegation (1st place), while Kenya and Mali each won Outstanding Awards (2nd place). Further more, all three Specialized Committees took awards with a Best in Security Council and ICJ as well as an Outstanding (2nd) in NGO's. Keep up the great work. We are all proud of you! Let this year be the best year that East Brunswick Model UN has had to date! |
